My very own mongrammed DIY varsity sweater

So here is my finished varsity sweater! I have already showed you a tutorial on how I made the varsity letter (J as in Johanna of course!) and here comes the actual sweater, which BTW took less time to make than the varsity letter! I had planned to use the raglan pattern from the Jenny Hellström book, but then I discovered that the pattern was pretty similar to the Built By Wendy raglan top which I already had as a sloper in card stock paper, so I decided to used that pattern instead to save time and skip all the tracing hassle.

 

This varsity sweater is truly a stash buster project. I used some leftover ribbing fabrics in grey and off white, a cotton burnout voile for the overlay and some black fleece I had lying around. The only thing I had to buy was the off white fleece for the upper letter applique.

 

 

The voile is slightly delicate so after cutting I noticed it had a little tear close to the neckline and I didn’t have any more fabric. Hopefully it won’t grow bigger.

 

I left the back plain since I wanted to preserve the movement of the stretch knit fabric. The downside of adding a woven overlay is that it can restrict the movement and might require adding more ease to the pattern.

 

Inspired by the street style look of the varsity sweater, I tried to recreate that vibe in the photo shoot . Luckily we have a basket ball court and a skateboard ramp with graffiti just around the corner from our apartment, so I think it worked out well!
