Burdastyle high collar striped sweater

As I’ve probably talked about a zillion times before, I’m a sucker for knit patterns that has some kind of innovative design twists (and that includes twist tops!). So when I saw this Burdastyle sweater pattern I was instantly smitten. It was no smooth sailing however. The thing that got me were the collar and zipper application. If you look closely you can see that the corners on Burdastyle’s version has mitered corners at the bottom of the zipper insert. That is a little detail that really elevates the look of the sweater. However after doing a little test run, I realized that there were no way I could achieve such sharp 90 degrees corners on my soft cotton jersey.

So instead I opted for a regular centered zipper application. And even so, it was still quite fiddly with the collar pieces and facings, not to mention matching up the stripes! In situations like these I tend to head into a dark place where I feel unsatisfied, especially since I have pretty high aspirations when it comes to finishing. But now after sitting on it for a few days and looking at the photos while writing this blog post – I actually feel pretty darn good about the end result

The sweater is definitely oversized. I actually went down one size but especially the sleeves are still pretty big for my liking. Also it should be noted that the pattern is a tall size and I’m a petite so that might be a factor too. I shortened the pattern in three places; at the armscye, above the waist and below the waist.

As for the fabric, it’s a thicker organic cotton jersey, somewhere between a regular cotton jersey and a sweatshirt fabric. So that was my a summary of my sweater journey. It’s funny to think about but almost every garment I make evokes some challenges and emotions, and this project was no exception!
